Where will the Working Class Retire?

I was talking to the HVAC guy while he was doing the routine maintenance check for our heating and cooling system. In 3 years, he would be working for this huge power corporation for 40 years. He says that he can’t afford to retire even if he is looking at $2,000/month retirement benefits not counting Social Security because of the way prices are shooting up these days. His plan is to work until he is able. But he’ll probably work for someone closer to his Pennsylvania home which is 1.5 hour each way from his usual route. He said that he is looking at retiring in Mexico but he is concerned about the Mexican Laws that prevent foreigners from owning property. I told him that I’m from the Philippines and he can live like a king on his $2,000/month. From speaking with other people, It seems like a significant percentage of the population is considering to retire outside the US because of the cost living is getting more and more expensive.

He also told me that since our heating/cooling system is a 15 year old mass housing builder quality, we should start saving up for $7,000 to replace the units. Then consider the water heater getting replaced because he has seen basements getting flooded by old leaky systems. He isn’t selling me the stuff, he just wants homeowners to know what to expect.
