Where did the Rice Go?

Instant hike of food prices is sending everyone into a panic mode. I read that even Costco and Sam’s Club is limiting how much rice customers can buy now. What the heck happened? Where did all the rice supply go? I know that gas prices have gone up tremendously, we now pay $3.50 per gallon for the lowest grade in our area and is affecting everything. But how did the rice supply suddenly went into crisis mode? I really can’t understand it. Does anyone know how this came about? Did the rice farmers go on strike or something? Or did the population suddenly explode or the rice supply might have been stolen buy the aliens from the UFOs sighted over Phoenix?

My Aunt called me in a panicky voice and told me to buy rice from Grand Mart as the prices have soared. She said the 25 lbs. that used to sell for $11.99 is now $20.00
I have been reading a lot about this in the papers and hearing about it on the radio.
It’s alarming, sad and frustrating.

Hi Greymom,
It’s all 3 that you said. We went to Costco and they don’t have the Jasmine rice anymore. We will check next time but I think people just bought them out or something.

Tina,
Last March, there was a month-long rain in our province in Catanduanes. People were scared and thought that it was the end of the world. They couldn’t go out fishing, tend to the farm, and even plant vegetation because of flowding. I guess it was pretty much true everywhere in the Philippines. Thus, the shortage of rice came about because my brother said they didn’t have a decent harvest.

Hi Ate Belle,
Thanks for relating what your people experience in Catanduanes. Yes, I heard about the excessive rainfall last year. So that explains it.
