Eclectic Taste

Pinoy Mom’s Network theme for the month for Fam Pics is: “plated” - anything on a plate. Food is one of my favorite topics.
My food choices are quite eclectic. I like to try everything! I enjoy both rustic home made dishes as well as food that entails refinement in preparation.

Tea Party for Two: Mommy Tina and Lil K
One Sunday while my husband was away fishing, I baked blue berry muffins and my daughter asked for milk to go with them when they were ready. I decided to use the tea set instead of just ordinary mugs for the milk and tea for me. My daughter was tickled pink to be able to use mommy’s special tea set(there’s also a story behind it, I had a really great deal on it meaning I didn’t pay alot of money for it). Why should we put our nice stuff away on the China cabinet only to be admired from afar? Why not use them for the purpose they were meant to be? Everyday is a special occasion.

Blue berry muffin up close and personal
When blue berries are in season, my husband would give a subtle hint that he would like me to bake blue berry muffins by buying a pound of them from Costco. These berries are not only great for muffins but they are also packed with anti-oxidants.

Sushi galore!
I got hooked on sushi when my husband took me to Sushi Ono. Someone can easily spend $60+ on sushi for two here in the States and we haven’t been back for ages! That’s why when we went to the Philippines last year, I had only one thing in my mind when the plane landed: pig out on Sushi at Dad’s! I had to wait a whole night because we got out of the airport by 1:00 am!

Grilled Trout on Leaf Plates
My family and I went on a boat fishing trip on my daughter’s birthday 2005. The biggest one is the first trout I ever caught! Yeah, I can fish too
. Trout are fun to catch. I like to fish for them because I can’t sit still, I like to jig my pole alot. When we got home, we grilled them! I insisted on planting hardy miniature banana plants 4 years ago for ornamental and for this purpose!

Sticky Rice Cake
I try to re-create some of my Mama’s and Lola’s dishes. This snack/dessert treat needs muscles to stir(good exercise). Stir until it has a consistency to stick on the ceiling. When we were kids we used to be scolded because we tried to have fun throwing our sticky rice cakes up on the ceiling to test the theory that they can indeed stick like glue. I also used banana leaves for the plating so that the cake won’t stick to the real plate.
I can go on and on about food so I better stop here before I get too hungry.

How sweet that you and Lil’ K have tea parties like that. I love blueberries and those muffins surely look good.
My husband and I love Sushi and all kinds of Maki too.
I love different kinds of kakanin like Sapin-sapin, biko, palitaw, etc.
That’s a great catch. I loved how you ended this post with fun humor.
I haven’t posted mine. I better browse my files now and look for appropriate ones to fit the theme.

Hi Rach,
She really likes it when she uses the “grown up” stuff. She tries to be careful.
Thank you. Lil K insists on mommmy-lilk time on Saturdays.
Great to know you also enjoy sushi, I can eat the stuff until I pop! Looking forward to your post.
Hi Mitch,
Thanks. Kulang nalang kape ano? The framing? It’s inspired by Ate Connie’s.
Hi Ruth,
I will have to review my memory with the kakanin(I’m not very scientific on Filipino recipes- puro eyeball lang hehehe), I didn’t make it this All Soul’s Day which I normally do. I am so confused over the fats on the coconut cream. We are watching my husband’s cholesterol and according to the ‘guide’ he should stay away from coconut oil. May coconut bang walang oil? So I didn’t want to end up eating it all that’s why I didn’t make it.

Hi KongKong622,
. The set’s market value is really expensive but I got them dirt cheap and I was able to donate to our church, I have to post the story soon.
Thanks, they were
Hi Lynn,
Salamat! If you have a daughter, you can try it with them and they would feel extra special. You can even dress up as if going for high tea kahit sa bahay lang. It’s fun!
Hi Ate Connie,
. They are sweet and really juicy.
Thanks for dropping by
