Upscale Hair Design for Less
By KK on Sep 2, 2007 in Save Money, Beauty
It’s been three months since I had my last hair cut. Yes, I’m that thrifty! hahaha. It’s also because I found a lady in Crisfield who knew exactly what I envisioned my hair to look like. She was the last one who cut my hair and I was patient enough to wait to see her during the long vacation in Crisfield, Eastern Shore. So last Monday I made an appointment with her for Thursday at the local barber shop. Yes, barber shop. My husband went for a hair cut before and she happened to be the one who cut it. I was observing how she cut my husband’s hair and decided on impulse to have mine cut by her too. I was able to tell that she knew what she was doing with a pair of scissors.
So I had my hair cut last Thursday but not on the scheduled time because she had a long wait. She had to fill up for the barber who owned the place. I was cool with it, I understood that the barber needed to have an MRI done. We were just going to the beach that day so there was no sense of getting stressed out over the schedule.
While she was cutting my hair, I asked her where she worked regularly(she worked part time at the barber shop) and she casually told me that she worked at About Faces. With a big smile on my face after her magical transformation, I felt very pretty. I looked up About Faces and realized that she worked in an upscale day spa. I could have easily spent $65 on design style & blow dry at the spa. I paid $27 with tip! I was so happy with my new ‘discovery’ and I just hope she doesn’t leave anytime soon again. It’s a thrill for me to find gems from unexpected places, thus the name of my blog. I couldn’t care less if I say I go to a barber shop to have my hair done, who am I trying to impress anyway to spend more? Why should I pay extra for ‘free’ refreshments(I don’t drink soda nor eat hydrogenated laden store bought cookies) and for the name if I know where the talent is?

Yes, I know! I need to loose a little bit of fat
. Got my lab results from my annual physical last week and everything is normal. I can honestly say I’m happy now and will be happier when I don’t have to carry around 20lbs extra.
I had my picture taken because it made my day to have a good hair design. It has also inspired me to post the photo in the front page of my blog
. Notice I said design, it’s because anyone with cosmetology certificate can cut hair but having the ‘eye’ takes gifted talent. Next time I wouldn’t feel too bad tipping her more.
Money Savings Tips:
- The hair designer can only do with what you have. Don’t expect miracles. Specifically expecting that your hair designer can fix what a only cosmetic surgeon can do.
- Extra flattery can cost you more. Excessive compliments from service people means more tips.
- I shampooed and conditioned my hair in the shower 30 minutes prior the appointment and didn’t put any hair products(mouse, hair spray, oil) prior to going to the hair designer, so I didn’t feel the need to have it shampooed again(there was a long waiting line and the hair designer actually didn’t mind). I used Vive Pro by Loreal Paris conditioner(available @ any supermarket or grocery store) and it works wonders!
- I’m maintaining my natural hair color this time because I noticed that when I color my hair it looks unhealthy when the color fades out.

Hi Tina. You look refreshed and very happy. Nice hairstyle. It’s wonderful to see your lovely smile.
That hammock looks so inviting. It must be an ideal place to relax.

oh, so this is the new hairstyle…it’s nice and it fits you.
Me naman before I have it done, I ask my hairstylist if it possible with the kind of hair and it’s condition, and when she says no, well i gotta look for a new style

Hi Raq,
.
Thanks. It’ll be fun if she did. You can round up people to have their hair cuts too
Hi Ate Marie,
Salamat din. I am just too impatient for the process. I’d have to sit there for 20 minutes and it has to be done every 6 weeks or so.
Hi Lovelyn,
. We just have to find things to perk us up everyday.
Thanks for the “hotter” comment
Hi Rach,
Thank you for the lovely comment. We had a good 15 minutes on the hammock. We were always on the go doing something.
Hi Ate Girlie,
Thanks. My hair is easy since it’s straight. But you are right we have to choose styles that fit our facial shape and hair texture.
