I am a Sponsor of Alzheimer’s Memory Walk 2007

In the past five years, I have met so many people who are closely related(parents, aunts, uncles, etc) to patients who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. I am baffled that people as young as 65 are being afflicted by this disease. Contrary to what I have naively thought that only people in their late 80’s+ only suffer from it. I believe that it is very important for everyone to be aware of Alzheimer’s disease in order to understand those who already have it and help prevent it from it’s early onslaught on the younger population.

One effective way of making others aware is by supporting the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. It is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Held annually in hundreds of communities across the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $225 million.

Team captains are needed NOW! Team Captains need to sign up early to ensure they have enough time to recruit a team and raise funds for the cause! Team captains are responsible for recruiting a co-captain and members. A good size team would have 10 members. Motivate your family, friends and co-workers to become your members. It’s a good excuse to do something together while having a good purpose in mind. To know more about being a team captain click here.(pdf file) It’s easy to sign up!

I am personally going to sign up to sponsor a Memory Walker from my area. Anyone can do it by using the “find a walk” feature that leads you to the “sponsor participant” feature. I feel strongly about this cause and I am happy to donate to a good charity. I hope you too will reach beyond the age of 65 and it would be wonderful to be surrounded by people who are aware of Alzheimer’s disease. Please feel free to find out more how you can help.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), also known simply as Alzheimer’s, is a neurodegenerative disease that, in its most common form, is found in people over age 65. Approximately 24 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer’s. - from Global prevalence of dementia: a Delphi consensus study

Hi Tina, it’s scary to have someone in the family have this disease. My FIL had it before he passed away two years ago. From a very busy, smart lawyer turned-politician, alzheimers took it all away. He totally forgot everything, his past, his friends and even his family. Sad, very sad way to go.

    Hi Rowena,
I’m sorry to hear about your FIL. Did he retire before AD? Or was he actively doing politics when he had it? I’m try to figure out the pattern.
