Change to a Healthy Lifestyle
By KK on Jan 26, 2007 in Lifestyle Change, Health
The number 1 resolution is loosing weight for almost everyone whenever New Year comes around. To me personally, I have started to be more committed to a healthier lifestyle after a wake-up call. My husband and I had a physical check-up around this time last year to find out that his cholesterol level was way up(268). We changed our diet(cut out pork sausages, bacon, ate more oatmeal, fruits and greens, etc.). He went back for a follow-up after 6 months and he weighed 10 lbs less and his cholesterol level was down to 237 but the doctor wanted to lower it more using a cholesterol lowering drug that is also said to prevent heart disease. After two weeks on the drug, my husband had to go to the emergency room and stay overnight at the hospital due to unexplained abdominal pains. Although the doctors didn’t say it outright that it was the drug that caused the pains(they told him to stop taking it anyway), my husband opted to do it the natural way- good old diet and exercise instead of waiting for the “magic pill”.
Even if I was given a clean bill of health, my doctor said it will make her happy if I lost 20 lbs. Here in the US, people sue doctors who call them FAT, so I guess she was just playing it safe and it didn’t occur to me that I really have to do something about my weight. Being in a country where 60+ million people are obese(according to CDC), it gave me the delusion of being thin when I’m 20 lbs overweight. Fast forward to 3 months ago when I came across a show in Discovery Channel with Dr. Mehmet Oz(he has been on Oprah too), I realized that I still needed to do some more changes. He is a co-author of a bestselling book- You: On A Diet: The Owner’s Manual for Waist Management. He emphasizes importance of healthy living by showing specimens of human internal organs(both healthy and unhealthy). His explanation about what bad ingredients(hydrogenated oils, high fructose, simple carbs[white flour], etc.) can do to the body is very effective on making me more vigilant of what I eat and serve my family. Seeing an enlarged heart coated with fat is enough kick in the butt for me to do something.
The problem with just aiming to loose weight without a change in lifestyle, meaning going to the old ways after attaining the targeted weight is gaining it right back. Going on a “diet” is temporary. Dr. Oz reiterates the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
To know more about healthy living visit Dr. Oz.
Getting the whole family involved in the change is imperative. It would be a futile attempt to do it alone unless you don’t share the same kitchen.
So far, I’ve been good on doing my cardio exercises on the elliptical trainer at least 30 minutes 3x a week. Making changes isn’t easy but I’d rather do them now before it’s too late.

it’s really good to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and that should include not only food but also exercise, peace of mind… everything to feel good.. i feel guilty on the exercise part, i guess i need to push myself..

I told my hubby that if he wants our son Josh to lose weight, we too have to go on diet. Mahirap di ba?
Pag healthy lifestyle, everything falls into place =)

This is on top of my list in my new year’s resolution. Its so easy to write it down but so hard to actually do it. I also had high cholesterol in 2005 but went down in 2006 . I did diet and exercise. Fast track to NOW and I’m starting to gain weight, tamad kasi bumalik sa gym. I ty to exercise on my gym ball too pero wala talagang motivation. Thanks for the links and your post as a good reminder. And good luck and keep up your healthy attitude.

At the moment, pinoy meals kami lagi. Althouhg si Lolo gawa talaga siya ng green salads niya.
Kasi feel daw niya if rice every day, he feel saturated.
Ke lola naman, okey lang rice evryday, kasi hectic ako sa work.
Pero yang diet and exercise is good talaga.
Madame ko fruit juice siya evry morning. Then may massager siya sa for slimming twice a week, meron din siya swimming sessions, spa and golf.
Dont know if compare sa hataw ko sa work, exercise na ako, may bayad pa, siya naman exercise niya, bayad niya, lol!
nice topic again kk, ituloy natin ang pag papa healthy and pagpaganda, lol

Analyse: walking is exercise :), take Louna for walks.
Ate Girlie, from your past posts, I think your Josh just needs to cut down on his junk food specially at night. Is he involved in sports at school? Kasi the rest of your family are not over weight, so it’s not the meals being served at the table. Cutting down on soda will help too if he drinks them.
Ate Leah,
It’s really dangerous to have high cholesterol, so while it’s early try to control it. I’ll check on you in a month :).
Ate Amy,
You have no problem with your weight :). Ok lang sa iyo mag-rice kasi physically demanding ang trabaho mo. I eat rice still but I have to work it out. Ayaw ko na yung drastic na diet, gugutumin ako. Are you still drinking plenty of water?

Hi KK! It is my goal too this year and onwards to keep a healthy lifestyle as I hate going to the doctor.
Now, am craving for a sinigang na isda with plenty of veggies. It is good enough for my dinner.

i agree, must be the foodstuffs he’s having outside the 3 meals, aside from the fact that he eats more than us really. he’s not into soda much, i’ve stressed to them the value of having water. is running around the campus counted? he says that’s his physical activity. he’s not into sports or anything at school, they just have their regular PE once a week. Come summer, we’ll bring him to mall of asia to go biking with us.

Hi Belle,
Thanks for your visit. I hope you were able to get your sinigang na isda with lots of veggies.
Ate Girlie,
Any physical activity counts because it’s burning calories. But it would be better if he has a routine. He was to eat less(no seconds) and eat healthy snacks(fruits, whole grain). Snacking on cakes or anything made with white flour gives me a sugar high then after an hour I want to eat anything I get my hands on.

Hi Tins,
First of all, im sorry to hear about your honey. Its really sad to hear stories like this….
Im going to send you the pdf version of the book “Natural Cures they dont want you to know” by Kevin Trudeau. Pls. find time to read it, it’s worth reading.
Im still far from being healthy, i’m still in the making of becoming one, but this book helped me find where to start.
Goodluck!!
